About Us

Phillip Thomas Memorial Tournament

The Phillip Thomas Memorial Tournament is an annual tennis event held in honour of Phillip Thomas, whose life and legacy continue to inspire our community. Phillip grew up at the Calgary Tennis Club and developed a lifelong love for the sport.

A talented athlete, student, and teammate, Phillip competed at a high level while studying Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of Calgary.

Phillip battled anxiety and depression throughout his life and tragically passed away in 2019 at the age of 25.

This tournament was created to honour Phillip’s memory while raising awareness and funds to support youth mental health initiatives through the Canadian Mental Health Association – Calgary Region (CMHA Calgary).

Event Overview

The Phillip Thomas Memorial Tennis Tournament, has a new date and home beginning in 2026. With more than 300 entries, it has grown into Alberta’s largest provincial tennis event. The OSTEN & VICTOR Alberta Tennis Centre (ATC) has proudly supported the tournament through sponsorship, annual donations to the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), since the tournament's inception.

This year's event will take place over three weekends in August. The tournament raises funds for the Canadian Mental Health Association in memory of Phillip Thomas through the EQUIPPED Program, which provides mental health courses for young adults. To learn more about the program click here.

SUPPORT
THE CAUSE

The tournament exists to raise funds and awareness for youth mental health programs through CMHA Calgary — including EQUIPPED, a resource created specifically for young adults and launched in memory of Phillip. In 2025, the tournament raised $15,000 for CMHA Calgary, and the 2026 edition aims to grow that impact even further.

If you'd like to contribute, donations can be made directly to CMHA Calgary and are eligible for a tax receipt.

Benefitting Charity

This tournament was born from a gift in Phillip Thomas's memory — a donation to CMHA Calgary that launched EQUIPPED, a mental health program built for teens and young adults navigating anxiety, depression, and the stigma that so often surrounds them.

As Phillip's family shared, "our hope is that this program equips teens and young adults with the tools and resources they need to cope with mental health struggles, build resilience, and end the stigma around mental health."

Every match played and every dollar raised helps continue that mission.
